The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox

This cleansing and detoxification program looks at a person holistically, rather than focusing on individual health problems. This diet was created by the founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat in Massachusetts, who is a naturopathic doctor, registered nurse, and colonic specialist. The premise behind the diet is that our bodies are filled with toxins, and through fasting we can rid our bodies of toxic materials and thereby be lighter, feel healthier, and look radiant within days.

Weight loss occurs through the diet’s detoxification process, where you only drink liquids in the form of juices, soups, and supplements. Although it is a liquid diet, the plan promises to leave you without hunger pangs or cravings. It is also simple, so that there is no need for mathematical skills to determine your daily intake. While bliss is promised at the end of the journey, be prepared to make pit stops, as you have a “healing crisis” – referred to as a time where you feel under the weather or sick. During this time, which usually occurs during the fourth and sixth day, and lasts for one to three days, you may experience nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and body aches.

What Makes the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox different?

The Martha’s Vineyard Diet is a cleansing diet which rids the body of accumulated toxins from foods, cleaning products and the environment. This diet is different from others by banning the act of chewing any food and incorporating the need for body treatments, such as colonics and coffee enemas.

What is The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox?

The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox is a cleansing diet that believes that toxins are the real root of weight gain and the inability of people to lose weight. It is not the individual’s fault that they are fat! You can choose to follow the diet for 21 days, 7 days or just 2 days.

The diet divides foods into three levels:

Overcivilized food: This includes canned, boxed and instant food, all of which make us tired, confused and heavy.

Fresh and Organic Food: This includes all organic foods, which detoxify the body, thereby supporting good health and helping maintain a healthy weight.

High-Density Nutritional Supplements: This includes green powder, protein powder, and cleansing herbs that strengthen the immune system and make us clear-headed and more energetic.

The diet has two stages:

1. The cleanup – This is a spring cleaning for the body, as you rid yourself of the toxins stored in your fat cells and organs. This is accomplished by consuming large amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables.

2. Repair and Rebuild – Here, everything you consume is in liquid form. No chewing allowed! Enjoy plenty of soups, juices and liquid supplements.

The diet also contains these Golden Rules, to practice every day:

  • Must have a minimum of 21 fruits and vegetables in the form of soups, fresh live juices, and supplements.
  • Eat every 2 hours.
  • Consume your nutrients in liquid form.
  • Drink at least 48-64 ounces of water daily.
  • Buy a juicer!
  • Drink your juices immediately to ensure the preservation of nutrients.
  • You must have two detoxifying treatments each week.

A typical day on this diet might look like this:

You start your day with a gentle walk to get the toxins moving, followed by a carrot juice for breakfast, tomato juice for lunch and Asian Spinach Soup for dinner. Throughout the day you will also drink a high-density antioxidant berry drink, a green drink, and continue drinking juices every two hours. During your favorite prime time TV show, jump on your rebounder (a small trampoline) to get the toxins flowing. Unwind at the end of the day by lighting candles and playing soft music as you administer your enema.

What are the weight loss expectations?

If you choose to do the 21 day diet, women can plan to lose 21 pounds, and men could lose up to 30 pounds. If you do the 7 day plan, you can lose between 5 and 10 pounds. 2-day plan can help you lose 1-2 pounds, if you aren’t overly toxic.

Is exercise promoted?

While exercise is not strongly stressed by this diet, gentle walks and bouncing on a rebounder (small trampoline) are encouraged to help rid the body of toxins.

Are supplements recommended?

Supplements are not only recommended, but necessary on this diet. Some of the supplements which are recommended are: green drinks, antioxidant berry drinks, digestive enzymes, aloe vera, Herbal Cleansing Formula and protein drinks. These are conveniently available for purchase on the website.
